Storyline

---

Venice, 1866. The Countess Livia Serpieri falls in love with the Austrian lieutenant Franz Mahler and becomes her secret lover. Livia's cousin, a known patriot, delivers her the funds necessary for the Italian insurrection, but she gives them to Franz to cheat with a doctor to escape the impending war. In the meantime the hostilities between Italy and Austria break out and the lovers finally joins in Verona, where the Austrian officer reveals brazenly who he really is.
