Caltabiano, Alfio

Alfio Caltabiano in Sette contro tutti (1965)
Alfio Caltabiano was an actor, stuntman, master of arms, screenwriter and director, active in Italian and European films from the mid-1950's to the late 1970's.

All sources seem agreed that he was born on July 17th 1932 in Pistoya, Italy.

His earliest confirmed role comes from 1954. From the late 50's to the mid-60's he was fairly busy as a stuntman and master of arms in peplums, working his way up to small character roles. He changed career direction in 1967 to become a director and screenwriter and he would direct and write 6 films over the next 6 years, 5 of which he also appeared in. He doesn't seem to have appeared in any other films during these years, but in 1976-77 he returned to the screen for 2 final appearances in westerns as actor/stuntman, before disappearing off the radar.

He died in Rome on June 23rd 2007 (some sources say July 19th) of an acute myocardial infarction.

I have found several undocumented appearances by Alfio, so there could well be more.

Titles to check
  • Capitan Fantasma (1953) IMDb for stunts. I didn't recognise him. I will be making a topic for this film sooner or later, so will continue the search then.
  • La battaglia di Maratona (1959) IMDb for stunts. He is not identifiable in the poor quality copies currently available, but he may be found hidden under a barbarian wig if a better quality print should appear.
  • Oremus, Alleluia e Così Sia (1973) IMDb as Reverend Smith

No Alfio!
Titles where Alfio is listed as appearing somewhere online, but cannot be found. There always has to be one!
  • Gli ultimi giorni di Pompei (1959) IMDb has him listed as both Master of arms and for stunts. He is not credited for either and if he does appear he is not identifiable. There is no master of arms credited, so it is quite possible he did perform this function, but with no credit or on-set images there is no way to confirm this.
  • La rivolta degli schiavi (1960) IMDb for stunts. If he does appear he is not identifiable.
  • Colorado Charlie (1965) IMDb as Creonte, credited as "Alf Randal". These are Alfio's role and pseudonym from Il colosso di Rodi, there is no such credit in this film and he does not appear, so it's your typical IMDb f**k up.
  • 5 figli di cane (1969) IMDb as Player, whatever that means. He is credited for direction and screenplay, but not as actor and I didn't find him appearing anywhere in the film.

    1966
  6. L'armata Brancaleone .... credited as Master of arms
  7. Mark Donen - Agente Zeta 7 .... credited for Pyrotechnics and fight arrangement

    1967
  8. Ballata per un pistolero .... credited as Director and for Screenplay and Story

    1968
  9. Comandamenti per un gangster .... poster credit as Director. IMDb says he should also be credited as writer, but this needs to be confirmed.

Ben-Hur (1959) as Pirate, in the centre of the images in a yellow-ish bandana.

IMDb also has him listed as a stunt double for Charlton Heston, but I was not able to identify him as such (which is how it should be)
