Waterfront (1984) (TV mini-series) - episodes 1 and 2, as Professor Arnaldo Chieri.

John went all the way to Australia to appear in this mini-series centered around conflicts between striking Australian dock workers and Italian immigrants during the 1920s. He plays an Italian professor who travels to Australia with his daughter (played by Greta Scacchi) to get away from the Fascists, and in a bid for authenticity, he recites the majority of his dialogue in Italian with accompanying English subtitles. It's a major supporting role, but for some completely inexplicable reason, poor John is not included in the cast list!

Unfortunately, I was unable to find a copy of the third and final episode, so I can't say for sure whether John appears in it or not, but considering that his character is found dead at the end of episode 2, I'd say it's extremely unlikely.
