Falchi, Paola

Paola Falchi in Le vergini di Roma (1961)
Paola Falchi was a beautiful actress and model, active in Italian and European films between 1959-1963.

Paola came to public attention after winning the 1958 Miss Italia title, which led to her competing in the following year's Miss World contest. The publicity gained from this enabled her to embark on a short-lived, but interesting, acting career in films and television.

Her biographical details are a bit sketchy. Most websites say she was born in Rome in 1940, however IMDb alone gives the unlikely date of May 21st 1931 in Trieste and a further magazine clipping gives her birth place as Rimini - confusing! She is presumed to be still living.

A number of online sources also refer to her having a singing career and make particular reference to a song, "Bimba", being a hit in 1959, however outside the biographies I can find no online references to this recording, so I assume it must be from the film Ciao, ciao, Bambina!, released that year, which I have so far been unable to find. Her Italian Wikipedia page says she retired from the entertainment buisness in 1971, but with no reference to what work she was doing between 63-71.

On the strength of her small legacy of performances, it is a great shame she never got the opportunity to further develop her natural talent for acting.

Since she is not a very well-known face, I would not rule out the possibility that a few uncredited bit parts in films may yet turn up.

Filmography

1960
  1. Giallo club - Invito al poliziesco (TV series) - season 2, ep. 6: "Un giorno prima" .... Vivian (credited)
  2. La regina delle Amazzoni .... Amazon (credited)
  3. San Remo - La grande sfida .... The aspiring actress (credited)
  4. Tu che ne dici? .... Girl who appears from Solitario's bed (uncredited)

    1961
  5. Le ambiziose .... Gina (credited)
  6. Le vergini di Roma .... Aurelia (credited)
  7. Then There Were Three .... Giovanna (credited)

    1962
  8. Marco Polo .... Fatima (credited)

    1963
  9. Les vierges (Le vergini) .... Mme. Gautier (credited as "Paola Falohi")

Piu Paola!
Of Paola's 9 known acting roles I have so far been unable to find copies of 3 of these (her Giallo Club appearance is included in her filmography due to a magazine credit).
  • Ciao, ciao bambina! (1959)

La regina delle Amazzoni (1960) credited, as Amazon.

Paola plays one of the more prominently featured of the amazons, and holds her own among an ensemble cast that includes many of the up-and-coming and already established actresses working in Italian cinema at the time.

Le ambiziose (1961) credited on the poster, as Gina. She should also be credited in the film, but the closing credits were chopped on my copy of the film.

Once again Paola shines and shows a flair for comedy in another largely-female ensemble cast.

Le vergini di Roma (1961) credited, as Aurelia

A second "amazon" role, here more prominently featured as the lieutenant to Sylvia Syms' leader, Clelia. She adds some femininity and glamour to an otherwise fairly butch-looking bunch.

Then There Were Three (L'urlo dei Marines) (1961) credited, as Giovanna.

Paola has the leading female role here among a predominantly American male cast in this US-Italian co-production shot in Italy, demonstrating that she was capable of handling a serious dramatic role. Being the only female, she featured prominently in the film's advertising, including shots that weren't included in the film itself.

Marco Polo (1962) credited, as Fatima.

A smaller role here, though still dramatic, as one of the many girls Marco Polo (Rory Calhoun) makes love to, then leaves behind.

Les vierges (Le vergini) (1963) credited as Paola Falohi, as Mme. Gautier.

Another supporting role, but still noticeable, as a laboratory worker, in what would appear to be Paola's final screen appearance. She is the token Italian actor in this French-Italian co-production, filmed in France.

Paola first came to public notice as the winner of the Miss Italia contest in 1958.

This image makes mention of her recording of the song "Bimba", which sadly seems to have vanished without trace. It also reveals her vital statistics as being 87-60-92 and gives her birthplace as Rimini (which contradicts other reports of Rome and Trieste).

Her Miss Italia title led to her representing Italy in the 1959 Miss World contest, held in London. Sadly she was unplaced in the finals.
