Filippo Degara, (stage name of Giuseppe Cuccia, 1928−1989) was mainly a theater actor. In the cinema he achieved some small but valuable supporting roles.

He chose a stage name because the birth name did not seem pleasant to hear, so at the beginning of his theatrical career, in one of his first important plays, while he was at the Sant'Erasmo theater in Milan, in via dei Giardini (which is now no longer exists − Ed.), in the company of the famous theater actress Lida Ferro. At first he decided to call himself with the name Pippo, with which he was called by his friends, and to use his mother's surname, Zangara; but Lida Ferro suggested that he change it to Filippo Degara. Degara in one word, not splitting into "De Gara" as some sources erroneously report.[1]

His film career was distinguished by the dramatic roles played in arthouse films such as Indagine su di un cittadino al di sopra di ogni sospetto (1970), Fellini's E la nave va (1983) and Orfeo (1985). But the most important Colossal in which he participated was the multi-censored Lion of the Desert (aka Il leone del Deserto, 1981), shot in Libya in the summer of 1979. Anyway, the younger generations certainly remember him more as the blind butler in the comedy-horror film Fracchia contro Dracula (1985).
