Directors

Jacques Tourneur - Credited as Director in the English credits and as "A film by" in the Italian and French credits.
Bruno Vailati - Credited as Director in the Italian credits and as Producer in the English credits. According to Mylene Demongeot's autobiography, Tourneur did not have much involvement in directing the film, leaving most of the work to assistant director Vailati.
Mario Bava - credited as Director of photography and for Visual effects, Bava reportedly completed the film after Tourneur declined to extend his contract.

Storyline

In 490 BC, as the immense Persian army of Darius I marches towards Greece, hoping to subjugate it by exploiting its internal divisions, a Greek soldier, Philippides, leads a fight against them. (from Google)

Cast

Actors credited in the Italian version, in credit order, which are the same as the English and French credits.

IMDb and ANICA seem to indicate that a number of additional actors should be credited (Alan Steel, Franco Fantasia, Carlo Lombardi, Ignazio Balsamo, Gian Paolo Rosmino, Walter Grant and Maria Grazia Sandri), however since these actors do not appear in the Italian, English or French credits, then I don't know which credits they could appear in. Maybe there were some alternative Italian credits, but, if so, I have never come across them.

Unidentified actors

Uncredited actors listed as appearing by other sources, but not identified
  • Rinaldo Zamperla - IMDb as "Gladiator". He may be one of the soldiers in training in the centre in image 24, but opinion seemed to be that it was not clear enough to be certain. There is a more probable, but still uncertain, ID as a Greek soldier in image 82.

This may be Rinaldo Zamperla. Opinions ranged from agreement to uncertainty, so for the moment I think we must leave it as a possible to probable ID

In 60, we have a Basile, I thin, but I can't tell them apart.

76 + 78 is Stagecoach Driver.

81: Severini (again in 83) and Caltabiano.

Fortunato Arena in 85

A Bonadonna in 109

Severini, again, in 115 and 123

I think it's Giovanni Cianfriglia in 128 reaching for the rudder

And, to me it doesn't look like Franco Fantasia. "If" that's a Fantasia, it's more likely Andrea.

Not Pasquale, but maybe a second role for Antonio? See what Matteo thinks since he knows him best.

Same role as previously posted despite the different costume, but it's a better pic of him so I replaced the old one

2nd role for him, added, thanks

Definitely not Elio, but quite possibly Giovanni (below in other late 50's/early 60's roles)? See what others think

No question to me that it's Franco (below in other roles dating from 58-60), his hair is brushed a little differently and the beard is false, but the features match perfectly. Definitely not Andrea, whose face was rounder. Other opinions welcomed of course.

Some uncertain ID's. Any opinions appreciated.

Maybe Giancarlo Bastianoni? He always seemed to make the same facial expression at that time and the hair seems to match, but not sure.

Could this maybe be Giovanni Cianfriglia in a wig as one of Steve Reeves several stunt doubles? It's certainly not Alan Steel.
uk63a.jpg

And I'm sure this is the same actor in both these roles, but I'm undecided if he can be Armando Fracassi (below). The beard is shorter than usual and the hair styled differently, but facially he is at least very similar.
