Barbi, Vincent

Vincent Barbi 1956.jpg
Vincent Barbi in Cineguida 1956
Vincenzo Barbi, always billed in films as Vince or Vincent, was an Italian small-part actor, active in Italian films for 2 short periods in the mid-1950's and mid-1960's, and in American films and television until the mid-1990's.

He was born to a mother named Concettina on January 11th 1912 in Naples, Italy.

In 1931, aged 19, he went to New York as an amateur lightweight boxer to represent Europe vs. America. Initially only going for 15 days, after 10 he decided to make New York his home, realising there was more money to be made there than in Naples. In 1935 he turned professional, appearing in 68 fights, of which he won 42. He fought world middleweight champion Fred Apostoli, but was defeated by a knockout.

He married a Dutch woman named Joan in 1937, with whom he had 2 children, Barbara and Richard.

Through contacts he made in boxing, including big band conductor Guy Lombardo, he became the manager of a nightclub and in 1940 retired from boxing. He worked as a private detective for hotels in New York and Miami and became the owner of a small stable of horses, but lost everything after betting on a horse that lost. Not so easily defeated, he became a boxing trainer for the Catholic Club of Young Americans and a wrestling manager.

Vincent's acting career began (year uncertain), after he encountered CBS director of programmes Bob Fryer, while working as a clerk in the American Federation of Labor offices. Changing his name to Vincent (or Vince), he became an actor in American television, specialising in playing gangsters and thugs, for which the New York Herald Tribune newspaper dubbed him the "Ice gangster", claiming he had killed 210 people on screen (this would suggest he actually appeared in far more than the 4 early 50's TV titles listed on IMDb).

In 1954, Vincent returned to his native Italy after an absence of 23 years. Over the next two or three years he appeared in small roles in quite a few feature films, including three starring Totò. It is probable that, had he stayed in Italy, he would have had a promising career as a character actor in Italian films, but by 1957 he was back living in the United States. He would only return to Italy to appear in a couple more Italian films in 1963-4.

It's a shame that there is little information available regarding his later years in Hollywood, since the people he worked with were a fascinating bunch. Initially at least he juggled work in mainstream films and television with usually larger roles in low-budget exploitation films. In the late 60's he began appearing in (and possibly financing) softcore sleaze films, though, being Hollywood product, these were very tame by the standards of Italian exploitation. In the 70's and 80's his career took in blaxploitation, several arthouse hits for John Cassavetes and numerous no-budget cult/trash films for infamous directors and producers such as Roger Corman, Jonathan Kaplan, Ted V. Mikels and Fred Olen Ray.

His last known film appearances were in 1994 when he was in his early 80's, 4 years before his death. Vincent died on September 27th 1998 in Los Angeles, California, aged 86.

I think it is highly likely that there could be undocumented appearances to be found, particularly from the late 40's/early 50's, and maybe also in some mid-50's Italian productions.[1]

Notes and sources
1. Most of the biographical details from Vincent's early life come from a 1954 interview which can be read on his Tototruffa profile

On the Waterfront (1954) as Spectator at the tribunal, on the right side at the front.

This film is missing from Vincent's IMDb page, so I think it is quite possible that there could be more American films from the early 50's or even late 40's to be found, particularly ones shot in New York where he was living at the time, as this one was.

Totò all'inferno (1955) credited, as Al Capone.

I'm patiently waiting for Totò's most visually interesting film to appear in a print that is anything but awful! In the meantime these will have to do.
