I found a newspaper article with a heading saying he is starting his acting career aged 80 (unfortunately the rest of the article is not clear enough to read), which tied in with 3 major roles he played between 1962-4, but I have also found a few earlier appearances for him among my unidentified whitebeards, so he obviously worked as a generico for a few years at least before belatedly getting his big break.
