José María Labernié was a small-part actor, active in Spanish films and television from the early 1940's to the early 1990's and in Argentine films for a couple of years in the early 1970's.

What little biographical information is known comes from biographies of his former wife, actress Florinda Chico, and tend to paint him in a rather unfavourable light. He was married to Chico in 1950 and reportedly initially refused to allow her to work, saying her place was to stay at home and raise the family (while biographies of Chico label him a chauvinist for this behaviour, it must be put into context since this was the normal attitude of Spanish society at this time). After several years the couple were struggling financially and Chico too began to appear in small roles, her career eventually eclipsing that of her husband. In 1963 Labernié confessed to having an extra-marital affair and the couple separated, but would have to wait 19 years before they were able to divorce when that finally became legal in Spain following the end of the Franco regime. The pair had 2 daughters who would remain with Chico following the separation.[1]

Having found an undocumented role from 1942, it seems that we should now watch out for him in other 40's films. From the start of the 1950's he would work steadily in small roles in Spanish films until the end of the 1960's. From the Chico biographies we know he also worked in the theatre during this time. In the early 1970's he appeared in small roles in at least 3 films shot in Argentina, followed by a 5-year gap, so it would appear he was living in South America for a while at this time. By 1977 he was back in Spain, where he was lucky to be able to resume his career and continue to work fairly steadily into the early 1990's.

I have found an undocumented role while preparing his topic, so it would seem likely that there could be more.
