Twelve inmates escape from the Rome penitentiary: among them are the murderer Alberto Lettieri and his gang which also forces Giacomo Masoni, a former railway manager, to flee. The task of rescuing them falls to Commissioner Murri, loved by his colleagues, but opposed by the judiciary for his methods too violent. Murri discovers, by questioning Masoni's young niece, Laura, a trail capable of leading him to Lettieri: in all likelihood, the bandit will use Giacomo to seize a load of banknotes destined for pulping, worth a few tens of billions, which a train will take from Milan to Rome. After killing some of Lettieri's men in a firefight, Murri is summoned by the commissioner to be suspended from duty but Murri will be able to get two more days to act which will be enough to foil the blow and defeat the criminal gang.
