Director

Mario Bava

Leopoldo Savona (uncredited) Savona was the original director. The film ran out of funding mid-production and when it was resumed he was replaced by Bava, who re-shot much of his footage.

Storyline

After the apparent death of her husband, King Arald, Queen Karin is living as a peasant with her son, Moki, hiding from Hagen, Arald's enemy. A mysterious stranger named Rurik begins acting as Karin's guardian, which eventually leads to a brutal showdown between Rurik and Hagen.

Unidentified actors

Unidentified credited actors
  • Renato Terra Caizzi - credited with c.s.c., does not appear
  • Sergio Cortona - ANICA lists him as appearing in 3 other films from the 1950's (one with role), while IMDb has one other (different) credit without role. IMDb lists him as working in various production capacities in 19 films. It's hard to imagine who he could be playing since the only unidentified role of any substance is the witch in the opening scene.

Uncredited actors listed as appearing by other sources, but not identified
  • Tony Burton - ANICA, which lists one other credit without role where they say he is credited as "Leslie Daniels", which sounds rather odd.
  • Osiride Pevarello - IMDb as Hagen's henchman. Presumably misidentified in this role played by his brother, Renzo.

"Leslie Daniels" is a pseudonym that was frequently used by dubbing actor/director Tony La Penna for his on-screen roles. He appears on-screen in the film Viaggio in Italia (1954) where he plays a character named Tony Burton, so I guess the confusion must be related to that, though it still doesn't make much sense. I don't see La Penna anywhere among the unidentifieds.

Pic 13: The girl in red is a very young Nadia Marsala.

Btw, Giacomo Rossi Stuart's character is surely meant to named Harald rather than Arald. Harald is a very typical Norwegian name (the name of our current king in fact), but probably comes across sounding like Arald because the Italians don't pronounce the H (which is also why the name Hagen comes across sounding more like Aghen).

There doesn't seem to be any way to make sense of that "Tony Burton" listing. Since he's uncredited I may as well leave it as it is, since the ANICA listing mentions neither Daniels or La Penna.

Marsala added, thanks. Her topic is a mess, what little there is of it.

"Arald" changed to "Harald".
